EOSC-hub: integrated services for the European Open Science Cloud

The EC-funded project EOSC-hub project started on January 1st 2018, bringing together an extensive group of national and international service providers to create the Hub: a central contact point for European researchers and innovators to discover, access, use and reuse a broad spectrum of resources for advanced data-driven research.

The consortium of 100 partners from more than 50 countries will develop the vision of the Hub as the integration and management system of the future European Open Science Cloud. The EOSC-hub project mobilises providers from the EGI Federation, EUDAT CDI, INDIGO-DataCloud and other major European research infrastructures to deliver a common catalogue of research data, services and software for research.

For researchers, this will mean a broader access to services supporting their scientific discovery and collaboration across disciplinary and geographical boundaries.

EOSC-hub will significantly reduce the fragmentation of the IT facilities and digital tools in Europe. By bringing together a broad range of services from general and domain-specific research digital infrastructures under a common integration and operation layer, the EOSC-hub will foster new modes of working for collaborative research to deliver trusted services.

EOSC-hub will liaise closely with OpenAIRE Advance, a project set up to support the Open Access/Open Data mandates in Europe.

Tiziana Ferrari, Technical Director of the EGI Foundation and Project Coordinator, says: “I am thrilled to work for a project that is expected to lower access barriers, tackling issues such as federated identity, harmonization of service access policies, and coordinated service provisioning in Europe and beyond. With the Hub, sharing, using and reusing research data will be easier for research collaborations at all scales.”

Per Öster, Director of Research Infrastructures and Policy at CSC-IT Center for Science and Project Director, says: “Data is now in focus everywhere in research. The vision of the European Open Science Cloud, a capability to share and work with data for all research is very strong. By this project we take the first steps toward federated support of services to realise this vision.”

Giacinto Donvito, Technical Director of INDIGO-DataCloud and Technical Coordinator, says: “In EOSC-hub, we are integrating technological requirements and use cases coming from tens of Scientific Communities to facilitate how science is made, speed up adoption of innovative technologies and improve competitiveness of Europe in the exploitation of distributed data, compute and storage resources.”

The project will bring together hundreds of experts working in a number of intertwined tasks covering strategy, business development, technical coordination and service management, to give a few examples.

Tiziana Ferrari, as EOSC-hub Project Coordinator, will be responsible for the overall project management including administrative and financial management within and across work packages. The Project Management Board, under the coordination of Per Öster, Project Director, will supervise the project strategy and implementation. Giacinto Donvito will lead the Technology Committee, a body created to evolve the project’s technical roadmap and supervise the contribution to open source community projects.

The EOSC-hub project (full title: Integrating and managing services for the European Open Science Cloud) will run for 36 months, through to December 2020 with funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 777536.

Decommissioning the Workload Management Service WMS

Dear EGI users,

as previously announced, in January 2018 it is going to start the decommission procedure for all the WMS servers in the infrastructure: they will be put in draining in order to avoid submissions of new jobs and to allow the ending of the ones already submitted.

As alternative workload management system, EGI can provide support for migrating to the DIRAC service, a tool that provides features very similar to the WMS ones.

A central server (DIRAC4EGI) is available for the EGI user communities: if you need a Workload Management System for your daily activities, please discuss it with your VO managers and get in contact with EGI Operations through a GGUS ticket. Together the DIRAC supporters, we can set-up the server for your VO and provide support for the migration.

EGI highlights at DI4R 2017

The Digital Infrastructures for Research conference is just around the corner, taking place from 30 November to 1 December 2017 in Brussels.

Europe’s leading e-infrastructures, EGI, EUDAT, GÉANT, OpenAIRE, PRACE and RDA Europe, invite all researchers, developers and service providers for two days of brainstorming and discussions under the theme “Connecting the building blocks for Open Science”.

EGI is proud to participate with use cases and presentations in the following sessions and demos:

  • National initiatives: this session, chaired by Tiziana Ferrari, will showcase how how national digital service providers supporting research and open science, are strategically getting organized nationally to increase cross-coordination, strategy making and sustainability.
  • Special focus on Earth Observation: the session includes talks featuring EGI’s support for the Earth Observation field, such as our collaborations with Terradue and NextGEOSS.
  • Building ENVRI-as-a-Service to the EOSC: chaired by Yin Chen, the session will focus on ways of connecting ENVRIs to the European Open Science Cloud.
  • How to make EOSC services FAIR? Gergely Sipos and Diego Scardaci explore ways to develop FAIR services (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable), such as the EGI Marketplace.
  • The future EOSC-hub Marketplace: This demonstration will introduce the EGI Marketplace and how it will be used in the EOSC-hub project and become the landing page for users of the European Open Science Cloud.

Απόσυρση της υποδομής HellasGRID

Λόγω παλαιότητας πρόκειται να αποσύρουμε τους κόμβους και τις υπηρεσίες του HellasGRID.  Ξεκινώντας από τον HG-03-AUTH κι στη συνεχίζοντας με του υπόλοιπους κόμβους του HellasGRID μέχρι το τέλος του 2018 θα κλείσει όλη η υποδομή του Hellasgrid με εξαίρεση του κόμβους που θέλουν να συνεχίσουν να λειτουργούν τα ιδρύματα με δικές τους δυνάμεις – υποδομές (HG-02-IASA & GR*).   Στη συνέχεια θα αρχίσει κι διαδικασία απόσυρσης κεντρικών υπηρεσιών του Hellasgrid  (CA,  VOMS, PROXY κλπ).  Για την κάλυψη των αναγκών σας σε υπολογιστική ισχύ προτείνετε να κάνετε αίτημα στα https://hpc.grnet.gr/access/ & https://okeanos.grnet.gr/home/

 

 

New publication: EGI & Research Infrastructures

We are happy to announce that we published a new collection of use cases highlighting EGI’s work with research infrastructures (RIs).

The new publication highlights the diversity of challenges that research communities encounter in their work and the abundant support that the EGI community offers to tackle these challenges.

EGI is working closely with research communities to co-develop new solutions for their scientific problems.

For example, the European Space Agency connected two of their thematic exploitation platforms to the EGI Federated Cloud to support their computational needs. The MoBrain collaboration partnered with several EGI data centres to use High-Throughput Computing and Online Storage services needed to develop webportals for life and brain scientists worldwide. The DARIAH research infrastructure is using EGI Cloud Compute resources to support a new science gateway that makes digital applications available to arts and humanities scholars.

The achievements in the new publication would not be possible without the collaborative work of the EGI Federated data centres, the EGI Federated Cloud providers, and the involved research communities.

We would like to thank everyone for their support and dedication in making this publication happen.

EGI endorses the EOSC declaration

EGI endorses the principles of the EOSC Declaration and advocates the European Open Science Cloud to be the initiative addressing the needs of open access, sharing within and across research communities, ensuring sustained funding to digital research infrastructures.

We advocate the scope of EOSC to be as broad as possible to include FAIR advanced digital services, scientific instruments, data, software, knowledge and expertise that enables researchers to collaborate more easily and be more productive.

EGI actions

EGI commits to the following actions that altogether contribute to the implementation of the European Open Science Cloud:

Governance and funding
  • Support the definition, implementation and operation of the governing structure benefiting from its long-standing experience with more than 300 data centres in 50 countries.
  • Contribute its best practices and experience to the definition of the EOSC “rules of engagement”, i.e. the policies for the EOSC actors (e.g. end-users, customers and providers) leveraging for the lightweight federation of services capabilities ensuring interoperability among multiple suppliers at worldwide scale.
Data culture and FAIR data
  • Provide and improve implementation guidelines for FAIR services in the area of advanced compute, federated identity provisioning, authentication and authorization, and contribute to the definition of the EOSC minimum set of reference standards and interoperation agreements and service accreditation models for EOSC.
  • Develop the skills and certification schemes necessary to become users or operators of digital research infrastructures and EOSC through a network of community-lead competence centres involving multiple research communities, technology experts and service providers.
Research data services and architecture
  • Operate the EOSC Hub, the Service Integration and Management system (SIAM) accountable for ensuring that all EOSC service providers perform to provide a seamless service that is compliant to contractual obligations made with customer organizations. Activities include: communicate and manage alignment of services to defined policies and standards, define and maintain service level agreements, conduct service audits and quality assurance reviews, manage end-to-end service level management performance retaining overall accountability, provide the tools for aggregating demand and supply, make services and research artefacts discoverable and accessible at European level etc.
  • Operate an open hybrid e-infrastructure offering data-driven advanced compute – Cloud Compute and High-Throughput Compute – and data services from publicly funded and commercial organisations and maintain and evolve the related implementation guidelines to make the related services FAIR.
  • Operate a federated identity provisioning, authentication and authorization services for the EOSC users and service providers.

The full programme of the 2017 edition of the Digital Infrastructures for Research Conference is now available.

Under the theme “Connecting the building blocks for Open Science”, the conference programme builds around 2 plenaries and 12 breakout sessions addressing 6 key topics:

  • Interoperability
  • Data science and skills
  • Impact evaluation and metrics
  • Security, trust and identity
  • The EOSC & EDI building blocks
  • Business models, sustainability and policies.

Complemented with 35 presentations and 8 lightning talks, the conference’s programme will offer a unique opportunity to network and build collaborations via its demo and poster sessions held throughout the event showcasing innovative solutions, services, initiatives and success stories that support open science and its building blocks.

Attendees will hear from our world-renowned keynote speakers:  Katrin Amunts, Professor for Brain Research at the Cécile and Oscar Vogt Institute for Brain Research at the Heinrich-Heine University Duesseldorf, Director of the Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine (INM-1), Research Centre Juelich and Jo van den Brand, Professor of Physics at VU University Amsterdam, researcher at Nikhef, the Dutch National Institute for Subatomic Physics and VIRGO spokesperson.

Participants will also have the opportunity to discuss in detail and make concrete progress during the breakout sessions. DI4R 2017 is focused on showcasing best practices, policies and processes, data and the necessary services for the support of the research process and advancement of scientific knowledge and open science.

The conference will also mark the start of the first OpenAIRE Datathon, aiming to stimulate developers and data scientists to analyse and adopt the OpenAIRE Information Space.

EGI congratulates the Virgo collaboration for their contribution to the 2017 Nobel Prize in physics awarded for the observation of gravitational waves.

The Virgo detector is located in Italy, within the site of the European Gravitational Observatory (EGO) and was designed to discover gravitational waves – ripples in the fabric of spacetime – predicted by Einstein’s general theory of relativity. The first detection was announced by the Virgo collaboration and the LIGO collaboration in February 2016. The discovery opened a new window of looking at the universe.

Virgo is a European collaboration of scientific institutions from six countries: Italy, France, the Netherlands, Poland, Hungary and Spain.

Virgo relies on EGI High-Throughput Compute resources provided by the following data centres:
