The eXtreme Data Cloud project (XDC) kicked off in January 2018 in Bologna, Italy, with a mission to develop scalable technologies for federating storage resources and managing data in both existing and next-generation highly distributed computed environments in Europe.
XDC is coordinated by the National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN) and is a follow-up of the INDIGO-DataCloud project, which ended in September 2017. The XDC consortium brings together technology providers with experience in software development and large research communities from a broad spectrum of disciplines, such as life sciences, clinical research, astrophysics and high energy physics.
Continuing the efforts of INDIGO-DataCloud in the direction of providing web-based and mobile interfaces, XDC will integrate some intelligence on top of data management functionalities to meet the specific needs of scientific communities and implement a more flexible, efficient and scalable computing and storage infrastructure in Europe.
“We are very happy to be part of the XDC project and build on the successes of INDIGO-DataCloud”, says Matthew Viljoen, Operations Manager at the EGI Foundation. “EGI is involved in this project by assisting with dissemination, training and technical exploitation and by contributing to the quality assurance and ensuring that the software outputs of XDC may be easily used on eInfrastructures”, he adds.
XDC involves eight partners and is funded with three million euros over 27 months.
